Why compress MP3 files?
MP3 is also known as MPEG Audio Layer-3 and in recent times has felt like the go to audio file format. It's certainly the most used and that's come as a result of more music being stored digitally. The MP3 file format was originally developed by the Moving Pictures Expert Group (MPEG) and its appeal is that it is around 10 times smaller than a WAV file but its quality sounds almost exactly the same. The reason for this is because whilst the MP3 file has been compressed, the type of compression used keeps the quality intact. As MP3 files are so widely used and stored it is perhaps unsurprising that they are often compressed further using tools like the Zamzar compression tool. Using the tool, the MP3 file is compressed to make it that much smaller whilst the sound quality remains intact.
