MP3 Audio Format MP3 Converter
MP3 is the most common format for storing and playing digital music. It’s short for ‘MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3’, and it was developed in the early 1990s as a way of compressing audio to create smaller files that could be easily shared and stored without losing too much sound quality.
MP3 is a universal format maintained by the International Office for Standardization (ISO). MP3 tracks will play on almost any device and with most media players, including Windows Media Player and Apple Music. Digital music took off in the 1990s and 2000s, and many users used media players to ‘rip’ CDs, or download tracks from sites like Napster, turning MP3 into the most common audio format. Because MP3 uses ‘lossy’ compression that can’t be reversed, some music listeners prefer to use other formats such as FLAC, even if the file sizes are bigger.

M4R Audio Format M4R Converter
The M4R format is an iPhone Ringtone File. The format was developed by Apple, and you can create M4R files using Apple iTunes. M4R files are similar to M4A music tracks, but they are clipped to 30 seconds to be used as ringtones. Once you create or download an M4R file and sync your iPhone, the track should automatically go into your ‘Sounds and Haptics’ library with all the other ringtones, rather than your main music library. You can also manually add M4R files while your phone is connected to another device.
If you’ve created an M4R file from a downloaded iTunes track, it’s probably protected by digital rights management (DRM), which stops you from sharing it with other users. If an M4R file does not have DRM protection, you can usually play it with VLC Media Player.

There are three main ways to convert MP3 files to M4R iPhone ringtones. You can use a free online conversion tool like Zamzar to quickly and easily convert multiple files at the click of a button. You can also convert files by converting them to AAC in your iTunes account, then renaming them as .M4R files; however, you would need to change each individual audio track, so it can be quite time consuming if you have a lot of files.
Another way is to convert your files using a downloaded software, such as Wondershare UniConverter, although you may need to pay to use the software and would need to install it on your device.
If you want to create an M4R ringtone file, Zamzar’s easy conversion tool could help. You can upload individual or multiple music tracks to Zamzar and convert them for free using the three-step tool, without downloading any additional software. Another option is to convert or rename audio tracks to .M4R using iTunes or using a media-editing software you install on your computer, such as Wondershare UniConverter.
You can easily turn any MP3 audio file into a ringtone for your iPhone. Online conversion tools like Zamzar let you quickly and easily create iPhone ringtones in real time. Just upload your MP3 file to Zamzar’s website, click to convert it, and then download a converted M4R ringtone file. Alternatively, you can do this using your iTunes library, by selecting tracks and converting them, first to AAC and then changing the file extensions to .M4R.
Either M4R or MP3 may be better for you, depending on what you’re using the track for. MP3s are better for playing music. But if you want to turn your songs, audio clips or voice notes into an iPhone ringtone or alarm, you’ll need to convert it to an M4R file. It will also take up less space on your device. Zamzar’s easy MP3 to M4R converter lets you quickly create new iPhone ringtone files. It’s a simple three-step tool – just upload, click to convert, then download your file.
If you have a Mac, there are a couple of ways you can change MP3 files to M4R without downloading any extra software. Zamzar’s online conversion tool lets you quickly convert individual or multiple MP3s into M4R iPhone ringtone files. Alternatively, you can manually convert files to M4R using iTunes, or by downloading media-editing software. However, it can be time consuming to convert files manually, and downloaded software takes up memory on your Mac and may cost money to use.
