An AMR file also goes by its full name of Adaptive Multi-Rate Codec File and was developed by Ericsson. The AMR file was designed to store spoken audio – such as MMS messages on mobile devices - in a way that didn’t consume a large amount of storage. Typically, AMR files are stored on mobile devices where storage is at a premium hence the need for a compressed file format like the AMR format. Despite being developed by Ericsson with the intention of being used for Ericsson devices, AMR files can be opened by a range of programs including the VLC Player, Windows Media Player, and Apple QuickTime Player.
