An EML file is also known as an electronic mail or email format file that has been saved by an email application such as Microsoft Outlook. The EML file was originally developed by Microsoft in order to allow people to transfer email messages between different clients.

The EML file is saved to a file in the MIME RFC 822 standard, which allows for easy archiving and storage. The file itself is fairly simple and is split into two sections: the header and the body. The header, unsurprisingly, contains data such as email addresses, subject title and time/date; whereas the body section is the message itself, complete with hyperlinks, attachments and text.

The EML file has been widely adopted and almost any email client can open this type of file.
