ODS files go by the full name of OpenDocument Spreadsheet files and were originally developed by Oracle. ODS files are like any other spreadsheet in that they are a grid of rows and columns and can have charts, shapes, hyperlinks and data added to them, as well as allowing users to enter formulas to automate more complex calculations. ODS files are free and open sourced, and an alternative to Microsoft’s Excel or Apple’s Numbers formats.

Open-source office software suites that include file types such as ODS are popular because they’re free and almost any program is able to open their files. So, increasingly, people are downloading programs like LibreOffice, which has a version of Word (Writer), Excel (Calc) and PowerPoint (Impress), is easy to use, and whose files can even be opened using Microsoft Office applications. The ODS file is the default file type for LibreOffice’s Calc program.
