A WPS file goes by the full name of a Microsoft Works Word Processor document file and is a text file. It’s similar in nature to a Microsoft Word document in that it allows text, objects, tables and pictures to be added, but it’s more limited in terms of formatting and doesn’t allow macros to be added into the document.

The Microsoft Works program was retired by Microsoft in 2009; because of this the WPS format is now largely obsolete but can still be used and opened via Microsoft Word or by an open-source office program like LibreOffice. In 2006, Microsoft replaced WPS as their standard word processing file format with their Microsoft Word DOC format.
